A New Chapter Begins
I have always thought some people make a room feel fuller simply by being in it.
She was one of those people. There was always someone around her. Children, nieces, nephews, friends, she had the kind of presence that made you feel there would always be a place for you and was also deeply creative, the kind of person who could find beauty in things other people might overlook.
When I think about the Ije Stool, I think about her.
The name is a quiet nod to that memory, but the stool itself carries some of the same qualities I remember: warmth, simplicity and the ability to fit wherever it is needed. It has a round top, a shape that feels almost familiar before you have even sat on it. There is something very easy about it, it does not demand that you decide exactly what it is for.
It can be a seat, hold a vase, sit beside a chair, wait in a hallway or become the little surface you reach for when you need somewhere to put something down.
Perhaps that is why I understood it immediately when I first saw it. I had been looking for something for my hallway, not another large piece that would take over the space. Just something small enough to sit comfortably against the wall, but interesting enough to belong there.
The stool arrived in cedar wood, and I remember liking the warmth of it, although I eventually wanted it a little darker. So it was changed. That is one of the things I appreciate about pieces made with intention. Once it found its place in the hallway, everything seemed to make sense.
The artwork on the wall had always been there, but the stool gave the space another point of interest. It did not compete with the things around it. It simply sat among them and somehow, that was enough.

I have never liked furniture that feels trapped by one purpose and maybe that is why the Ije Stool works so well for me.
Today, it can be in the hallway, tomorrow, it could be beside a lounge chair with a book resting on top, or simply holding a vase of flowers. It could become an extra seat when someone comes over. It is small enough to move without thinking too much about it. There is freedom in that.
You don’t have to redesign the room every time you want to change the stool’s purpose, all you need to do is you just move it and because of its shape, it seems to settle in easily wherever it goes.

There is a sweetness to the Ije Stool that is difficult to explain without making it sound like something it isn’t. It is not overly decorative or trying to be precious. It is simply a well-considered piece with a shape that feels familiar and a presence that grows on you.
Perhaps that is where the connection to her comes in again. Some people are memorable because they enter a room and immediately take over it. Others are memorable because they make the room feel better. She was the second kind.
And I think the Ije Stool is too. It does not need to be the most important thing in the room, it only needs to belong there.

When I first ordered the stool, I was thinking about a hallway, I was thinking about one particular corner and how I wanted it to feel.I wasn’t thinking about all the other places it could eventually go. But that is what good furniture does, you buy it for one place and, somewhere along the way, you discover that it could have belonged to so many others.
The Ije Stool found its place in my home quite easily and perhaps that is the simplest way to describe it.Some pieces ask you to make room for them,this one seemed to know how to make room for itself.
