 The Ìpèlè Accent Chair

Perhaps, “Different” Was Never the Chair.

It was 4 p.m., and after a very long day at the office and battling Lagos traffic, all I wanted was to be home.

The moment the door clicked shut, I pulled off my shoes and went straight to the chair. The breath of relief that escaped me still amazes me every time. There is something about that moment of sinking into it after a long day that feels almost therapeutic.

That was when I stopped to think about it. The Ìpèlè Accent Chair.

It is funny how we rarely stop to appreciate the objects that quietly become part of our everyday lives. They are there when we celebrate, when we rest, when we need a moment to ourselves. They ask for nothing in return, yet somehow become part of the memories we make within our homes. Perhaps, that is what good design has always been about. Not creating something that demands attention the moment you see it, but something that continues to reveal itself long after the first impression has passed.

Good design carries a quiet confidence. It does not compete with the room or ask to be admired every time someone walks by. Instead, it settles in. It becomes familiar. Before long, you instinctively reach for the same seat without thinking. Not because it is the newest piece in the room, but because it has quietly earned your trust. Perhaps that is the greatest compliment a piece of furniture can receive not that it is constantly noticed, but that it is deeply missed when it is absent.
Ironically, the Ìpèlè Accent Chair was never created for this moment.

Its story began in October 2024 with a client furnishing an Airbnb in Abuja. The request sounded simple enough: she wanted something different for the dining area. Not another chair that would blend into the room, but one that would quietly introduce character into the space.

The challenge with “something different” is that there is no blueprint for it.
It cannot be measured. It cannot be copied. It cannot be rushed. It is simply a feeling. And feelings are far more difficult to build than furniture.

The idea came together.Bringing that idea to life was the real challenge.

The Ìpèlè Accent Chair is one of the most demanding pieces produced in the workshop. Its construction requires metal, timber, and upholstery to come together as though they were always meant to belong to one another. The upholstery is carefully built onto the wooden structure before every element is coupled to the metal frame, a process that demands patience, precision, and an unwavering attention to detail.

There have been moments when a chair that looked almost complete was carefully dismantled and assembled again. Not because the design had changed, but because the execution had not yet matched the vision. That pursuit has continued over time. Even this year, the chair found its way back into the workshop, not to become something different, but to become something better. Sometimes the smallest adjustment is the one that brings everything into balance. Sometimes craftsmanship means beginning again, even when no one else would have noticed.

Looking at the chair today, it is difficult to imagine the amount of work hidden beneath its simplicity. What appears effortless in the finished piece is, in reality, the result of patience, precision, and countless thoughtful decisions.

Its name evolved too.

Today, it is known as the Ìpèlè Accent Chair, inspired by the Yoruba ìpèlè. A cloth gracefully draped over the shoulder, waist, or arm. There is a softness in the way it falls. That same quality found its way into the chair’s silhouette. The upholstery appears to drape naturally over its structure, giving a sense of movement to something completely still. Perhaps that is what makes the chair feel so inviting. It carries the appearance of ease while quietly concealing the complexity behind its making.

And somewhere along the journey, its purpose changed too. Although it was originally designed for a dining space, it refused to stay there. The addition of armrests transformed the experience completely. It became just as comfortable beside a reading lamp as it was around a dining table. It found its way into living rooms, quiet corners, and the spaces people naturally retreat to after long days.

The most memorable pieces have a way of rewriting the intentions they were designed with. They begin in one corner of a home and slowly find another. They become the seat chosen for morning coffee, long conversations, unexpected visitors, and those rare moments when silence is exactly what is needed. The room changes around them, but they remain exactly where they belong.

Maybe furniture is not defined by where it is placed. Maybe it is defined by how it makes you feel. Because after a long day, when the noise has faded and all that remains is the comfort of being home, the Ìpèlè Accent Chair does exactly what it was always meant to do. It reminds you that the best things are rarely rushed. They are simply still becoming.

Perhaps that was “something different” all along.
